It was unbelievable. I was having second thoughts whether to push through this stupid plan. I mean, I knew from the start that Harima accompanying me to the dance would spell disaster. But... what exactly happened?
When we picked him up from his apartment, I was rolling my eyes about the day. We waited for Hige for about five minutes when I saw this man coming down the stairs. At first I didn't recognize him. But when he knocked on my window.
"Ojo. Are you going to let me in?"
"Ah!" I opened the door.
"Kombanwa." who- who's this person? Is this Harima? Totally different! Even my driver thought so. He had this clean haircut, he's wearing a formal suit, I couldn't call him Hige cause he shaved, and I... I think he even fixed his eyebrows!
"Did you wait long? I had to make sure everything's turned off before I left. I was just working on something. My computer didn't want to shut down right away."
"What were you working on?"
"Oh-- crap! Did I get ink on my suit?-- I mean. I was just writing some stuff on paper it was crazy... and then typed it on the computer."
"Couldn't you just typed it on the computer on the first place?"
"Maah, you're right. Ahaha. But I think it would've been easier to write with my hand. Anyway, it's nothing big. Are we going somewhere else first before heading to the hall?"
I'm not sure what he's thinking. He's a brute. But I don't know how he could act properly. Inside the limo, I was still pretty sure the party is going to be a wreck.
"Remember, you have to act like a gentleman. This is a very important party for me. Don't be rowdy. Don't be violent. Don't act like a delinquent. Got it?" he didn't say anything. He just gave me a nod.
When we stepped inside the hall, every important figure my dad knew was present. More pressure built into me. I am to represent our household after all.
"Who's that young gentleman with Eri-san?" I overheard from some lady. "He seems very... capable."
And when I turned my head around, everyone I saw, they were looking at us. I wasn't sure what they were saying but I had my guy telling me that the crowd was loving my chaperone.
"Uhm... Eri-san, I'm not really sure what I did wrong. I was just walking with you." he whispered.
"Everything's fine." I said. "Just make eye contact with everyone with a smile."
"Sawachika-sama! So glad you could make it. How is your father?" it was one of my dad's friend who's a business tycoon.
"He's well, Olof-san. The family doctor just insisted he should take a rest for today."
"My, he is a hard-working man, indeed. And who might this gentleman be? He looks like a very determined and rather a hardworking fellow too."
"Ah, he's my chaperone for tonight."
"Kenji, Harima. Domo." he bowed and shook hands with Olof-san.
"No need, to be modest, my boy. I am very much indebted to the Sawachika family. It's an honor to meet the chaperone that Eri-sama had picked. Ah, alas! I hope we could talk later, I must say hello to my clients here as well. Great party."
"Thank you. Don't worry about it, Olof-san." whew. That was close. But I felt that Harima-san didn't act like a gentleman at all. I mean... he can be a natural gentleman.
And he did. He became a natural gentleman in the ball. So natural that I had become care free and forgotten I had brought him in the party. Nothing unusual happened. There were no problems. Better yet, the party became wonderful.
"Eri-sama, I just want you to know that your chaperone is very kind. I was on my way to get some fresh air when I suddenly felt light headed. I think he noticed and he offered to get me a drink."
I just nervously laughed at lady Beatrice, one of the top fashion line designers in the prefecture. "He's a true gentleman, isn't it?"
And when it was time for dance, he had this very serious but calm look. I thought maybe he had been possessed by a spirit.
We danced. And everyone left the stage for us to dance all by ourselves. I was a bit embarrassed and conscious. I looked on the floor because I couldn't look at his face.
"Is something wrong?" he asked.
"No. Just. Keep dancing." I said. "And don't look at me."
At the end of the night, everyone went to shake my hands. I guess they were satisfied with the party? I'm not sure. But I think mostly it's because Harima-san did more than just a gentleman, but he helped me attend to the needs of the guests. Whether by talking to them or offering them something. How can I tell?
'I really enjoyed it. What a gentleman. What a lady. This is a very nice gathering. The hosts are very friendly. I like to ask the name of that gentleman with Eri-sama. Eri-sama was wonderful.' these are some of the comments that my staff reported. "Thanks, Harima." I said as we drove him back to his apartment.
"... sigh. It was fun." he said.
"... Harima... ano... nevermind." I just smiled.
